Frederick House – Guard House, York

Guard House is a former two storey, brick office building fronting Fulford Road which lies within the Conservation Area, partially comprising of the historic barrack’s wall to its principle façade, but is not seen as having any architectural significance to the street scene and therefore welcomes the opportunity for enhancements. The building is of solid construction, is to be retained, renovated and partially reconfiguration to provide primary access into the site of the new student accommodation beyond, and to provide new social/learning facilities for students.

Façade enhancements include the replacement of the large format window to the Fulford Road elevation to include entrance doors, larger window apertures to increase internal lighting levels and replacement of curtain walling generally to a more contemporary style.

The internal accommodation is to be configured to allow the provision of central reception services, adequate social spaces including common room, laundry room, gym, cinema, and a variety of upper floor rooms for group and private study.

A new communal outdoor space will create a beneficial meeting place and point of arrival.
