Champion Hill, King’s College London
The ambitious scheme, situated in the vibrant London Borough of Southwark, is set to transform the student housing landscape by providing top-notch accommodation for 717 students across four newly constructed blocks, each soaring four to five storeys high.
This development will also breathe new life into the historic 19th-century Grade II listed mansion, ‘Platanes’ replacing outdated and inadequate accommodations that fail to meet today’s standards. The thoughtfully designed layout forms three distinctive courtyard spaces, each radiating its own unique character and identity, fostering a dynamic community atmosphere.
Students will enjoy en-suite study bedrooms within a modern cluster flat format, promoting both privacy and social interaction through shared kitchen, dining, and living spaces. Moreover, the ground floor of ‘Platanes’ will feature additional communal areas, enhancing the residential experience.
Each of the new blocks will utilise a cutting-edge prefabricated panelised timber frame system, ensuring exceptional insulation and air tightness. With a commitment to sustainability, the project aspires to achieve BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certification, setting a new benchmark for eco-friendly student living.
It will also serve as the Building Information Modelling (BIM) template for the university, highlighting its innovative approach to design and construction. Secured in January 2011, planning permission paves the way for construction to commence in early 2013, marking an exciting new chapter in student accommodation in Southwark.
