Science Museum Group National Collections Centre

SMG

The Science Museum Group (SMG) Wroughton stands as a premier large object and library and archives store, pivotal for the SMG’s mission.

The forthcoming SMG Building ONE is set to become a state-of-the-art facility, meticulously designed to house and expertly manage the SMG collection. This innovative space will facilitate managed public visits, enhance object conservation efforts, and provide vital resources for staff.

Spanning an impressive 400,000 square feet, the building will feature dedicated object storage as well as essential support spaces, including a cutting-edge conservation laboratory, a well-equipped conservation workshop, loading bays, and a spacious collection study area.

Nestled within the scenic North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the facility occupies the historic site of the former Wroughton Airfield, blending modern design with the region’s rich heritage.

The project received planning consent in 2018, and construction kicked off in January 2019. With architectural services initially provided by GWP Architecture, the firm’s expertise was seamlessly transitioned to the contractor, ensuring a cohesive vision for this groundbreaking endeavor.
